One of the composition elements professional photographers look for when photographing landscapes is the "S" curve. If you go back to the blog entry on "The Photographer Becomes the Artist" take a look at Ansel Adams' Snake River and Tetons. It is a classic "S" Curve composition. The viewer's eye begins at the bottom of the page and follows the river as it winds through the photograph.
This is Polychrome Pass in Denali Park, Alaska. The park bus makes a regular stop at the pass and allows riders to get off and photograph. I got as close to the edge as possible to take the photograph. It is one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen.
The photo on the right is of Portage Glacier along Alaska's Highway 1. If you follow the river you will notice it winds up to the mountain and glacier where the water is coming from.
The "S" Curve is not limited to rivers. You will also find it on highways, streets, walkways, and in the photo on the left, flower beds.
